Do Religious Physicians Disproportionately Care for the Underserved?
Source: Annals of Family Medicine
In this large, cross-sectional survey of US physicians from all specialties, we found that religious physicians were not more likely to report practice among the underserved, although they were more likely to view their practice of medicine as a calling. In a prior study, we found that physicians who worked in faith-based urban community health centers explained their decision to work among the underserved as resulting from a distinctively religious calling. The present study suggests that although physicians who practice among the underserved may explain their work in religious terms, religious physicians do not appear to disproportionately care for the underserved.
