The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) is reporting today that the proportion of students in American graduate schools who were members of a racial/ethnic minority group rose to 28% in 2006, from 26% in 2005.

The survey report, Graduate Enrollment and Degrees: 1996-2006, reveals that enrollment of every racial/ethnic minority group was up by at least 3% in 2006, compared to no growth among non-minority students.

Notably, there was 9% growth in the total number of Native American students, with even higher enrollment gains in the critical fields of physical sciences (up 17%), engineering (12%), and biological sciences (18%).

Overall, graduate enrollment grew 2% last year, driven by increases in the number of female (2%) and international (2%) as well as minority students. There was no growth in the enrollment of domestic or male students. Over the last ten years, enrollment of international students has grown an average of 4% annually, while U.S. student enrollment has increased only 1% each year on average.
