Over the last 20 years, the 401(k) plan has evolved from a supplemental retirement benefit to the cornerstone of the American retirement system. Intentionally or not, many Americans today will rely on their 401(k)s as a significant source of income in retirement. While there is a wealth of 401(k) research available showing what decisions participants are making, to date, there has been little independent analysis of the impact of those decisions.

This research report attempts to bridge that gap by formally evaluating the prudence of 401(k) participant decisions. It answers the crucial question: “Are participants doing a good job managing their 401(k)s?”

Specifically:

  • Which participants are taking full advantage of their 401(k)s?
  • Which participants are making mistakes with their 401(k)s?
  • How much are participants’ mistakes costing them?
