Property valued at approximately $9 trillion sits along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts from Texas to Maine. These vulnerable communities must do more to adapt to their perma- nent natural surroundings – which are beautiful most of the time, but perilous during hurricane season. Although HURRICANE IKE: Nature’s Force vs. Structural Strength focuses exclusively on Texas, the report’s findings and recommendations apply to all coastal jurisdictions. Policymakers and other stakeholders in coastal regions should take the lessons from this report seriously, and act upon them swiftly to ensure the safety and resiliency of their communities. As hurricane season 2009 continues to unfold before us, there is no time to lose.
