Local communities are the lifeblood of the nation. Without them, we simply cannot function. And it is women who are often the key drivers of that community life – in residents’ and tenants’ associations, in youth and community groups, as volunteers in schools and neighbourhood centres.

But not all women feel that their voice is being heard. Not all of them feel they can overcome the obstacles in their way to play a full role in their communities. Muslim women, in particular, have told us that they often feel excluded, sometimes by their own communities and sometimes by those outside it – and that this was particularly the case after 7th July atrocities.

They feel that there are not enough Muslim women in public life – and the picture is not much better in politics either. And they are right.
