DocuTicker

GreyGuide

October 2008

DocuTicker publishes a weekly newsletter of highlights – great finds in our collection of full-text PDF reports published by government agencies, NGOs, think tanks and research centers. The weekly newsletter came after several years of publishing the DocuTicker blog and served to help alert users to interesting additions, which they might otherwise miss, given the volume of posting each day.

Now we’re taking the next step: developing a more in-depth periodical publication to highlight topics and sources, suggest research techniques and larger trends in the publishing of grey literature. This GreyGuide is our debut.

But we are interested in hearing from you about how to make the GreyGuide – and indeed DocuTicker itself – as useful to you as possible. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief online survey about your impressions of our offerings and share your opinions on where we go from here.

Your DocuTicker team depends on you!

Thanks for making our work worthwhile,
every day and every week.

About the GreyGuide

For years, DocuTicker's editors have shared daily postings of full-text PDF reports published by government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs and other public interest groups -- known as 'grey literature.' The GreyGuide is designed to help researchers who rely on grey literature and highlight aspects of the collection.

GREY LIGHT ON SOURCES:
ACADEMIC INSTITUTES

Many academic institutions have special research departments – often philanthropically funded – that focus on niche areas of study. They produce a range of reports... and we at DocuTicker are grateful for them!

Here are a few highlights from our resources that fall into this category:

  • Combating Terrorism Center at West Point
'The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point contributes relevant scholarly perspectives through education, research and policy analysis to combat terrorist threats to the United States. We maintain expertise in four primary areas: terrorism, counterterrorism, homeland security, and weapons of mass destruction. By developing a curriculum of the highest quality, producing theoretically informed studies, and crafting relevant policy recommendations, we remain an internationally recognized center of excellence dedicated to the advancement of terrorism knowledge and expertise'.

  • Cornell Higher Education Research Institute
Cornell School of Hotel Administration, Center for Hospitality Research

'The mission of the Center for Hospitality Research is to enable and conduct research of significance to the hospitality industry, while offering a series of roundtables and forums to improve the connections between academia and industry'.

  • Knowledge@Wharton
'The Wharton School is committed to sharing its intellectual capital through Knowledge@Wharton, the school's online business journal'.

  • Levy Economics Institute, Bard College
'The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, founded in 1986 through the generous support of Bard College trustee Leon Levy, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization. The Levy Institute is independent of any political or other affiliation, and encourages diversity of opinion in the examination of economic policy issues while striving to transform ideological arguments into informed debate'.

  • National Collegiate Athletic Association
'The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary organization through which the nation's colleges and universities govern their athletics programs'.

How do you find a research institute devoted to your particular topic of study? Follow the money: Since so many of these are created and heavily subsidized through philanthropy, identify a donor with similar interests to yours (or your clients’) and then explore its philanthropic portfolio for likely research institutes.

What’s your favorite fishing hole? Share it with us, and we’ll give you public kudos for your find! Email support@docuticker.com with your contributions.

CATEGORY ALERT:
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

There’s never a lack of reports and resources on intellectual property. No sooner do we manage to get our heads around how the latest technology impacts our use and sharing of ideas than a new wrinkle appears.

This collection by the numbers:

  • Since early 2007, we’ve posted a total of 108 reports with 'intellectual property' as one of the tags.

  • 79 publishers are represented

  • Publishers with more than 3 listed reports include the following:
    • Social Science Research Network (10)
    • The Progress & Freedom Foundation (4)
    • Institute for Policy Innovation (3)
    • Center for Strategic & International Studies (3)
    • Harvard Business School Working Papers (3)

In addition to ‘intellectual policy’, the 33 other tags are used on postings in this category. The table below shows the top labels and the number of times they appear:

The pie chart below shows this a bit more visually:

Hone in on the most relevant reports or resources for your needs by finding the nexus between concepts – technology, international and intellectual property, for instance. The following postings are a selection from those that include all three tags:

Please note: Links are to DocuTicker posts, where you will find the abstract of the report as of the time of collection. DocuTicker cannot guarantee that any reports will remain available on publishers’ websites.
